Doctor Gao Yaojie of China, was placed on house arrest on Feburuary 1st According to the article, Chine Places AIDS Activist Under House Arrest" in the New York Times wiritten by Jim Yardley and published on Feb. 6, 2007. The doctor was suppose to travel to the United States to recieve an award from the Vital Voices Global Partnership for her work in nonprofit organizations agiast AIDS. She is one of four woman who are being regocnized on the March 14 ceremony in Washington. The group hopes that the incident is just a misunderstanding and that the Dr will be able to attend the ceremony. The Chinese Ministry of Forieng Affiars has already allowed the award so the House Arrest incident is rather confusing for most people.
Dr. Goa Yaojie is known internationally after helping expose a program in China that infected over ten thousand farmers with the HIV virus during the 1990s. She also travelled her Providence spreading information about AIDS and AIDS prevention and helping orphans and dispensing medicine. She is also one of the few that advocated the problem of the virus and disease to the Chinese government to confront the spread of HIV.
